FiltraCycle: recycling cigarette butts to keep them out of the ocean. Rory McMahon, Ireland
Over the course of 2019 and 2020, FiltraCycle has been working on developing a process to collect and recycle cigarette butts into high-quality plastic. We have developed a method for extracting this plastic from cigarette butts and turning it into pellets that can be used in injection moulding. In this presentation, Rory will talk about the problem of cigarette waste and our solution.
How to prevent cigarette butts in cooperation with municipalities. Holger Holland, Germany
Cigarette butts are small, maybe even too small and they are rather no topic in public discussions and media. Even though they are single-use, nasty polluting the environment -soil plus ocean- and super toxoid. So the project: “Butt Buddy” was born. A cooperation between civil society, municipalities and companies with the target to raise awareness and prevent cigarette litter to end in the environment. Locally collected and recycled plastic (better CO² footprint) is the basis for the mobile cigarette ashtray. “Chalkofshame” is a further project that is meant to make a change. By circling the toxic cigarette butts with bright chalk, awareness is raised about the pollution butts cause. What looks like a “crime scene” is an eye catcher to all passers-by and is presented as a campaign to the local council… and these are only two examples.
